The Whyos were a dominant street gang in New York City from the late 1860s to the early 1890s, formed from remnants of earlier Five Points gangs. Based in the Bowery, they were predominantly Irish American and engaged in street fighting, murder, robbery, and extortion. The gang was known for requiring members to have committed at least one murder. They were eventually defeated by the Monk Eastman Gang.
