The Taliban is a political and militant organization in Afghanistan, founded in 1994 by Mullah Omar. It ruled most of Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, enforcing a strict interpretation of Sharia law, before being overthrown by a US-led invasion. After a 20-year insurgency, it recaptured Kabul in 2021 and now controls all of Afghanistan. The group is designated as a terrorist organization by several countries and is widely condemned for human rights abuses.
