Sureños are loosely affiliated gangs that pay tribute to the Mexican Mafia while in U.S. correctional facilities. Founded in 1967 in Southern California, they are primarily Mexican American and engage in drug trafficking, arms trafficking, and other crimes. They have a long-standing rivalry with Norteños and Nuestra Familia. The gang operates in 35 U.S. states and remains active.
