Gangs of Irish immigrants active in Bytown (later Ottawa) during the 1830s. Formed after the completion of the Rideau Canal left many Irish unemployed, they used intimidation to create jobs in the timber industry. Their activities escalated into robbery and murder, leading to the Shiners' War. The gangs were largely suppressed by armed patrols formed in 1837.
