Criminal gangs operating in late 19th- and early 20th-century Germany, notably the Weimar period. Formed in the 1890s as convicts associations to aid reintegration, they became fronts for illegal activities, practicing witness intimidation and providing alibis. Banned by the Nazis in 1933 but persisted despite efforts to suppress them.
