Colombian paramilitary group and private army formed in 1981 by drug cartels, politicians, and landowners to fight kidnapping and guerrilla groups. Supported by the Medellín Cartel, it assassinated political opponents and community organizers. Active through the 1990s, it waged counterinsurgency against FARC-EP and M-19.
