The Medellín Cartel was a loose coalition of Colombian drug trafficking organizations based in Medellín, Colombia, active from the 1970s to 1993. It played a central role in the international cocaine trade, led by Pablo Escobar and others. The network was known for its violence, including assassinations and terrorism, and was designated a terrorist group by the United States. It was dismantled after Escobar's death in 1993.
