Mexican criminal organization dedicated to drug trafficking and other illegal activities, designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department. Founded in the 1980s as a vigilante group in Michoacán, it later allied with the Gulf Cartel. In 2011, it split into two factions, with one retaining the name La Familia Michoacana and the other becoming Los Caballeros Templarios. The group was largely expelled from Michoacán and retreated to the State of Mexico and Guerrero. Its main leader, Nazario Moreno González, was killed in 2014.
