The Ku Klux Klan is an American white supremacist and far-right hate group that has operated in three major iterations since the Reconstruction era. It uses violence and intimidation to target African Americans, Jews, Catholics, and immigrants, and is considered one of the earliest terrorist groups in the United States. The first Klan was founded in 1865 by former Confederate soldiers, the second in 1915, and a third wave emerged in the mid-20th century. Despite declines, affiliated groups remain active.
