The Khmer Rouge was a communist-led insurgent and later ruling party in Cambodia, founded in 1951 and led by Pol Pot. It ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979, implementing radical social engineering that resulted in the Cambodian genocide, with 1.5 to 2 million deaths. The group was defeated in 1979 but continued as an insurgency until 1999.
