The Gangster Disciples are an African-American street and prison gang founded in Chicago in 1968 by David Barksdale and Larry Hoover. Originally formed as the Black Gangster Disciple Nation, the group split in 1989 into the Gangster Disciple Nation and the Black Disciple Nation. The gang is involved in drug trafficking, assault, firearms violations, fraud, homicide, and money laundering, with an estimated 30,000 members in Chicago and operations across the United States and internationally.
