The Bowery Boys were a nativist, anti-Catholic, and anti-Irish criminal gang based in the Bowery neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, active from the 1830s to the 1860s. Founded by Mike Walsh and William 'Bill the Butcher' Poole, the gang consisted of volunteer firemen and working-class men. They engaged in street fighting, knife fighting, assault, murder, robbery, arson, and rioting, and were known for their long-running feud with the Dead Rabbits and other Five Points gangs.
