The Bonanno crime family is one of the Five Families of the American Mafia in New York City, founded by Salvatore Maranzano in the 1890s. It has historically been the smallest and most brutal of the Five Families, with operations extending into New Jersey, Florida, California, Arizona, and Montreal. The family was involved in racketeering, drug trafficking, and labor union corruption, and was known for internal conflicts such as the Banana War in the 1960s. It remains active as of the 2020s.
