Jihadist militant group based in northeastern Nigeria, founded in 2002 by Mohammed Yusuf. It seeks to establish an Islamic state and has been responsible for tens of thousands of deaths, mass abductions, and displacement of millions. The group split in 2016, with one faction becoming the Islamic State's West Africa Province. It remains active despite the death of long-time leader Abubakar Shekau in 2021.
