The Baxter Street Dudes was a New York City teenage street gang active in the 1870s, consisting of former newsboys and bootblacks. Founded by Baby-Face Willie, they operated the Grand Duke's Theatre from a dive bar basement on Baxter Street in Manhattan. The gang wrote and performed plays and variety shows, using the theatre as a headquarters and underworld hangout. They engaged in tax evasion and thievery, and had rivals such as the Mulberry Blend.
