Sunni Islamist militant group that fought against the Ba'athist regime in the Syrian Civil War, aiming to overthrow Bashar al-Assad and establish an Islamic state. Formed in 2012, it was designated a foreign terrorist organization by the US in 2012 and was the official Syrian affiliate of Al-Qaeda from 2013 to 2016. In 2016 it broke ties with Al-Qaeda and renamed itself Jabhat Fatah Al-Sham, then merged into Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in 2017.
