Ahrar al-Sham was a coalition of Sunni Islamist rebel groups that fought against the Ba'athist regime in the Syrian Civil War. Founded in 2011, it became one of the largest rebel factions, with up to 20,000 fighters. The group aimed to establish an Islamic state under Sharia law.
